Pie Bird

I went to Pie Bird, the new restaurant on Person Street (around the corner from Krispy Kreme), for the first time tonight with 3 friends and I cannot say enough great things about it.  It's been open for a few months and I'm now kicking myself that it's taken me this long to try it since I only have 2 more days in Raleigh.  I will somehow find a way to have at least one more meal there because I loved it so much.

It is an instantly inviting restaurant because of the cute outdoor seating as well as the adorable "Pie Bird" sign and flower decorations on the glass.

If the outside wasn't enough to draw you in, a quick peak inside would do the trick with its clean but cozy feel, casually dressed and friendly waitstaff, as well as an eclectic crowd ranging from college buddies, to couples on first dates, to happy families.  The night we were there happened to have great live music, a solo guitar player- Carl Vick, which even further developed the local, community vibe that made the restaurant an enjoyable experience.

But now on to the really important stuff.... the food!  I have to admit I have not been this excited about a place since I discovered Market Restaurant this past winter.  Plus they also use local ingredients that are in-season from the Farmers' Market!

We started with two appetizers, the first being Pie Cracklins' which are leftover pie dough scraps that they fry and serve with a white bean hummus that tastes of garlic and smooth white beans, a great combination. The other option for the Pie Cracklins' is a caramelized onion dip that sounded delicious and probably what I will try when I go back again.

The other was a special that was Camembert cheese (similar to Brie) with figs, baked in a light puff pastry, served with creme fraiche and fresh berries.  It was slightly sweet because of the figs and it balanced perfectly with the creamy, rich flavors of the melted Camembert.

Then we ordered two Tomato and Goat Cheese Pies (a daily special) and a Mushroom tart.  Each of the pies comes with a side salad and you can either get a house salad with one of their homemade dressings or they usually have 2-3 special salads of the day.  I ordered one of the specials and it was a summer berry salad that had mixed greens, pickled shallots, goat cheese, summer berries, and then a house-made berry vinaigrette.  It sounds simple and similar to many other restaurants around here that do the same kind of salad, but this one was especially good.  I think it was because the dressing is homemade and you can really tell a difference between this and one just out of a bottle.  It was light and refreshing, everything a summer salad should be.

Next we had the pies, and Catie and I both ordered the Tomato and Goat Cheese pie:

This was a little slice of heaven.  You could taste the freshness of the tomatoes, the goat cheese was a deliciously creamy consistency, the crust was ideally thick and cooked, and the balsamic syrup on top was the  perfect way to accent the other flavors and also gave the dish an extra pop with every bite.  I ate it very slowly because I did not want it to end.

Katie had the Mushroom tart and while the description on the menu was the most appealing, and while it was still tasty, it was a bit of a let down.  It was a little too thin and didn't have as many mushrooms as one would expect since it is the focal point of the dish.  However, the earthy flavors of the mushrooms did pair well with the caramelized onions, Fontina cheese, and thyme, but you were left wanting more of the filling within the tart.

By this point we were all pretty full, but the list of sweet pies was just too tempting so Brittany ordered us a S'mores pie with vanilla ice cream to share.

This was an excellent decision because this was incredible!  It had a thick graham cracker crust with a dense layer of rich chocolate and then homemade marshmallow that was topped with even more mini-marshmallows that were lightly broiled to give them that campfire taste.  A bite of the pie with a bite of the vanilla ice cream (topped with a magic shell-type chocolate sauce) was perfection and we ate every bite of it.

It was a wonderful meal in a great environment and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new place to try!  You won't be disappointed!

Here is the website so you can go ahead and start drooling over the menu, but just keep in mind that they have anywhere from 5-10 daily specials that all sounded fabulous, so there are always more options.

Enjoy!

The best sandwiches of Raleigh, NC

Since I only have 4 days left in Raleigh before I begin my road trip to LA, I have been trying to hit up all of my favorite restaurants one last time before I leave.  This is difficult because Raleigh has developed quite the food scene over the past few years and my list is pretty long.

Now I love a tasty sandwich for lunch and I am always looking for new places to satisfy this craving.  Some of my favorite places that do this are Hayes Barton pharmacy at Five Points in Raleigh, Sandwhich on Franklin St. in Chapel Hill, the Rockford on Glenwood in Raleigh, Market on Blount St. in Raleigh, Herons (or the bar and lounge) at the Umstead Hotel in Cary, and the lesser known Which Wich on Lake Boone Trail in Raleigh.  Side note: they are opening a new location in North Hills next to Omega Sports near the movie theater.

In my opinion, Which Wich is the new and improved version of Subway or Quiznos.  They make perfectly toasted sandwiches with fresh tasting and unique ingredients.  How many other places offer pepperoncinis, tzatziki sauce, and crispy onion strings?  My personal favorite is the Bac-Hammon- the perfect mix of ham and bacon with your choice of cheese and other condiment options.

One of the best parts about Which Wich is that you choose the basic option that you want by picking up the respective paper bag and then on the bag are all of the condiment options that you can choose from.  You make your selection on the bag in red sharpie, write your name at the bottom, and then take it to the cashier.  It is quite simple and it keeps the line moving quickly.  It does get busy during lunchtime, but it is well worth the wait!  Below is an example of the sandwich shown above, aka the best one that I have tried yet.

Rewind.... Last week in China with Mom!

The best graduation/birthday present: a week in China!  Thanks Mom and Dad!

Welcome to Shanghai!  Day One.  Exploring the area around the hotel.

Cloud 9 Mall.  You would think it only has 9
floors, but it actually has 12!

                                     Escalators all the way up.

Meat on a stick in liquid... never could figure
                                              out which meats they were.

                                              Carrefour supermarket

The hotel- Renaissance of Zhongshan Park

Peking duck- a delicacy in China that originated in Beijing.

My attempt at being artsy in the elevator.

Mom back in her element!  It's all about the pearls!

The never-ending A.P. market.  We went for hours every day
and never even saw the whole thing.  It is huge and has the best shopping.

                              Our favorite electronics booth- Penny's

Mom and I at lunch at the AP market.

                                                   The menu.  The pictures help!

White rice with vegetables, marinated daikon, miso soup,
beef noodle bowl, and a milkshake!

                                          Delicious pork dumplings

                                                       Mom and Katie with Sarah!
One of my favorite lunches that we had there.  This is in the new restaurant that we discovered in the AP market and it had lots of tasty fried food, steamed rice, fried rice, and cold pijo (beer).  This was only half of our food and the bill for everything was$6!  Finally a place where the dollar is strong (well strong enough).

with Mom and Katie at lunch.

Peepa!  A new favorite fruit- a mix
between a peach and a cantaloupe.  So cute too!

The AP market is an underground maze
and this is the view from above.

                                                    more street food!

Chinese pizza made on the inside of a trashcan.

New job option for Mom if she moves to China.

Those are three of the pizzas cooking on the inside...
they are 20 cents per pizza.

This man wasn't thrilled about having his picture taken.

                                                 Lounge area of the hotel

Dinner at "Grandma's."  This is my favorite way to eat over there because you order everything that looks good to you and then you put it on the giant lazy susan in the middle of the table and pass it all around.  All of this food was $11 per person.

                                                         Lunch with Adam!

                                                         Pearl Tower

Shopping for linen at the cloth market with Adam.

Everything was much easier once we found
our own personal translator!  Thanks Adam!

Lots of rice, fried corn pizza with mayo,
                                              spicy green beans, etc.  Yum!

Mom and I in a cab going somewhere... I'm guessing we're trying
to find yet another kind of market!

Thanks for a great trip!

Making the move to Los Angeles, CA!

I'm moving to LA and I'm driving across the country to get there!  I decided to take the southern route and spend at least a few hours, if not 1-2 nights, in each city on the map above.  I leave on Saturday, July 3rd and plan on being in Nashville by dinnertime to see one of my favorite kiwis, Taylor Edwards!

Let me know if anyone has any suggestions of places to stop along the way, things to see, and most importantly, places to EAT!  I love diners, road-side dives, or even street meat stands, so don't hold back!  All suggestions are welcome.

I hope to post pictures and stories along the way.  I'm looking forward to accomplishing this bucket list goal and seeing lots of friends and family during my journey!
